About HeatPumpSavings

HeatPumpSavings is a free, browser-based heat pump savings calculator. Enter your home size, current heating fuel, and local energy rates, and it estimates how much a heat pump would save you per year — including the 30% IRA tax credit, your payback period, 10-year net savings, and CO2 reduction.

Why we built it

Heat pumps are one of the most cost-effective home upgrades available in 2026, but the savings are notoriously hard to estimate because they depend on your current fuel, your local rates, your climate, and your home's size. We wanted a tool that gives you a real, personalized number in 30 seconds — not a vague "you could save up to $1,000" — without uploading anything or signing up.

How it works

The calculator estimates your annual heating load from your home size and climate zone, then computes the cost of meeting that load with your current system versus a heat pump. For combustion fuels (gas, oil, propane) it divides the load by your furnace's AFUE to get fuel input, then multiplies by your fuel price. For a heat pump it divides the load by the COP to get electricity input, then multiplies by your electricity rate. The difference is your annual savings. It applies the 30% / $2,000-cap IRA credit to the install cost and divides by annual savings to get payback.

All of this runs as pure browser JavaScript — no server, no database, no account. Your inputs never leave your device.

Limitations

These are planning estimates. Real-world savings depend on factors a 30-second tool cannot measure: your insulation and air sealing, ductwork condition, the actual Manual J heating load of your home, and a correctly sized, properly installed system. Use this calculator to decide whether a heat pump is worth researching further — then get at least two contractor quotes before buying.

Default fuel prices and electricity rates are approximate 2026 EIA national/regional averages. Carbon intensity figures are EPA national averages. Always verify against your own utility bills and your local grid's energy mix.
